Photojournalistic Wedding Photography

What is wedding photojournalism?

The journalistic approach to wedding photography involves capturing spontaneous images of the wedding-day events as they unfold. Rather than the traditional approach of directing the process, I unobtrusively document with my camera the priceless unposed moments that together tell the story of the wedding.

Do you take backup equipment to weddings?

One reason that I invest in pro-level equipment is its durability. Fortunately, I have never had equipment malfunction at a wedding. But in the unlikely event an equipment breakdown occurs, I carry a complete backup kit - one or two digital camera bodies and three to four extra lenses.

Will you produce an album for us?

I truly believe that the most elegant way to share your wedding-day photos with friends and family, and, at the same time preserve those memories for generations to come, is to display your photos in a professionally designed album. We can custom design either a traditional, matted or a contemporary, flush-mounted album utilizing the photos of your choice. The album photographs are printed by a professional lab and expertly bound resulting in a keepsake to be cherished.

How long will you be at our wedding?

I will be yours for all your wedding-day events from the moment the preparation starts through the reception.

How many photographs do you take at a wedding?

That, of course, varies with each wedding, but, as a general rule, I take 1500 to 3000. After careful and thoughtful editing, we end up with about 300 to 500 keepers that we call the Selection.

What about proofs?

All our clients receive a Proof Magazine which is a spiral-bound, 10”X13” book of the Selection. The photos are exhibited in chronological order and printed six to a page.

Will we be able to view our photos online?

The Selection will be posted on a password-protected website for you, your family, and friends to enjoy. Conveniently, prints can be ordered directly via the website.

What’s your photographic background?

While majoring in biology and chemistry in college, I decided to take a “fun” course as relief from the very structured world of scientific study. To say that Photography 101 changed my life would be an understatement. It made me realize that I actually had a right side to my brain and that it was begging for stimulation. I did go on to get a BS degree in biology and chemistry, and then went on to graduate school to study photography, graduating with a master’s in photojournalism. It was in graduate school that I discovered the photography of Cartier-Bresson, W. Eugene Smith, and Robert Frank. The work of these photographers shaped my style and my vision of the world around me. Their influence is evident in my photographs today. I’ve been a professional photographer for over two decades, doing everything from fine art to magazines to advertising to photojournalism to wildlife photography. My personal photographic art has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries including the Dallas Museum of Fine Art and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

Do you do family group photos?

You bet I do! Generally I take about 20 minutes between the ceremony and reception to photograph the family groups. If what you have in mind requires more time, I'll be happy to accommodate, and I promise to keep it light-hearted and fun.
